General elections are scheduled to be held in Mexico on 2 June 2024. Voters will elect a new president for a six-year term, all 500 members of the Chamber of Deputies and all 128 members of the Senate.
Article 83 of the Mexican Constitution does not allow a president to run for re-election, meaning incumbent President Andrés Manuel López Obrador cannot run for reelection.[4]
The president is elected by plurality voting.[5]
Sheinbaum won the presidential election by a landslide victory of over 31 points, becoming the first woman and the first person from a Jewish background to be elected president of Mexico.[6][7] The election saw Sheinbaum receiving the highest number of votes ever recorded for a candidate in Mexican history, beating López Obrador's record of 30.1 million votes from 2018.[8]
